The Escalating Conflict in the Klishchiivka-Klishchiivka Region
The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia remains the center of global attention. However, things have escalated recently in a new hot-spot that neither side fully controls, called the Klishchiivka-Klishchiivka (KK) region. The Ukrainian military has staged a bold and uncharacteristically large-scale operation deep into Russian territory on the south side of the KK region, drawing the line of conflict tens of kilometers away from the not-so-popular tourist town of Bakhmut. In this operation, the Ukrainians have done what we might as well call a “military coup,” seizing control of an area that is not quite a town but nonetheless carries significant strategic promise.
A Crucial Point in Wartime Dynamics
The current military operations in the KK region represent a crucial point in the wartime dynamic affecting both Russia and Ukraine. For Ukraine, the situation offers an opportunity to press the advantage and “solidify its peace.” For Russia, the operations and their effects on the war in general compel it to act and respond. So how does this latest development affect the two principal actors, and what are the probable and possible effects that can be anticipated?
Beyond Territorial Disputes
The KK invasion’s effect goes beyond just fighting over territory. It reaches a lot of really important stuff, like security and the alliances that form based on it and the way countries all over the world manifest their sovereignty. We, as a nation, don’t get to choose how we live because we’re in this geopolitical moment—we happen to live in it. This is a conflict that affects lots of civilians, and nobody’s exactly sure how many have died, but the range seems to be from something like 20,000 to more than 100,000 military personnel. Ouch. That is some serious loss of life, and we certainly hope it’s not civilians. And this isn’t over yet; lots of analysts and historians think it could get way worse.
The Urgency of Military Operations
The military operations in the KK region have taken on a new urgency, calling forth from each side the best they have to offer. For Ukraine, the best seems to be the new 82nd Air Assault Brigade, newly formed and apparently composed of a large number of volunteers. This unit and others like it are pushing to take territory within Russian borders and along the critical supply routes that feed the Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. On the other side, Russia, using its own best units, the VDV and the KSO, is pushing hard to take the city of Pcov (63,000 before the invasion), a key supply hub that feeds the two supply routes moving southward toward Mariupol and the Azov Sea.
Aiming for Confusion and Negotiation
Ukraine’s invasion of Russian territory is aimed at causing confusion in the Russian camp and collecting some victories that they could show to the world. This might finally lead to some serious negotiations and a resolution of this conflict, which has already seen 10 million people from Ukraine displaced and has continued for over a year. The section of land that is called the Valdai National Park is very close to the Russian border. Pcov itself is about 40 kilometers from the Russian border—right in the heart of the Valdai National Park. That’s where the Russians have stationed their elite units.
The Global Implications of the KK Conflict
The KK region is under threat, but how it faces that threat could have significant consequences for both Ukraine and Russia, as well as for the global community, in terms of alliances and national security. If Ukraine is successful in the KK, that could send a powerful message of deterrence to other states that face the kind of threats that Russian revanchism poses. If Russia is successful, that could send the message that such revanchism is really okay, that you can go in and annex territory, and that the international community will give you a free pass to do it. Which side wins will have a far-reaching impact.
The Stakes of National Sovereignty
The implications of the KK invasion reach well beyond military matters; they go straight to the heart of national sovereignty and global security. As countries around the world deal with the signals sent by this confrontation, the continued fighting in the KK area serves as a stark reminder of how tenuous peace can be in our increasingly fractious world. While it’s difficult to see what exactly the Russians might have gained by this latest incursion, the potential for large-scale fighting in the KK valley looms. The valley has long been seen as a strategic gateway for both sides, and the presence of the Zasa River and the town of Pcov make it the center of gravity in the whole area. From either side of the river, the area can be defended or attacked; Pcov represents a key to controlling access up or down the river and a possible point for launching operations. Whether this tunnel-like valley becomes a cauldron that boils over could determine the outcome of the next phase of the war.
A Turning Point in History
As the globe observes this tense contest, one aspect is indisputable: the fracas in the KK region is not merely a shoot-’em-up; it is an affirmation of national resilience and an appearance by the nations involved that they are in a no-holds-barred fight to be the ones to dictate how sovereign states act within the period of their autonomy. Decisions made in this moment will be those that in a few years’ time we will probably look back on and say, “Ah, yes; that was a ‘turning point'”—the moment that changed the course of history in the region.
